GOLD / AGAINST GLASS
Shanghai
Hi there!
Are you fond of Shanghai?
This city is wonderfully lovely.
01 / THE HUANGPU
THE RIVER
AS ADDRESS
31.2304° N / 121.4737° E
Shanghai introduces itself across water. One bank keeps the stone façades of trade; the other answers in steel, glass and light.
The Huangpu is not a dividing line. It is the city’s longest room—a place where every period turns to face the next.
At the waterline, distance becomes a form of intimacy. A skyline can feel monumental; two people beneath it return the view to human scale.
02 / PUDONG
In Pudong, a cloud line can redraw the scale of the entire street.
03 / STREET VELOCITY
CITY IN
MOTION
Movement gives the plan its meaning.
Shanghai is read at two speeds: the long view from the river and the quick cut of a crossing. Between them, the city is constantly edited by commuters, deliveries, bicycles and light.
EAST NANJING ROAD / 31.2352° N
A street does not wait to be composed. Faces, storefronts and crossings remake the view every few seconds—one dense frame, always arriving.
FOUR CUTS / ONE MORNING
THE CITY
EDITS ITSELF.
Walk. Wait. Cross. Repeat.
04 / NEW ARCHITECTURE
NEW
FORMS
Buildings shaped as public encounters.
Shanghai’s new architecture is most convincing when spectacle becomes useful: a stair becomes a theatre, a roof becomes a walk, a façade frames a gathering.
Some buildings borrow the language of movement before anyone enters them. This one appears to have docked above the road—architecture paused between departure and arrival.

STREETS
REMEMBER
The old city survives through use, not silence.
Plane trees, campus walls, shopfronts and apartment windows keep different Shanghais in the same field of view. Memory persists because the street keeps moving through it.
FABRIC / POSTURE / MEMORY
THE CITY,
WORN CLOSE.
The qipao turns architecture into gesture: a high collar, a narrow line, a flash of colour against stone.

WRITERS ON THE CITY

Shanghai: a paradise built on top of hell.
The rails drew an arc and ran beneath the horizon at the far edge of the sky.
The Shanghainese are traditional Chinese, tempered by the pressures of modern life.
The turbid Suzhou Creek turned gold-green and moved westward, lightly and silently.
07 / AFTER DARK
LIGHT BECOMES
ARCHITECTURE
The city redraws itself every evening.
After dark, infrastructure becomes theatre. Headlights trace the avenues; hotel doors turn amber; the river carries the colour without keeping it.
ONE LAST ROOM / THE TABLE
THE CITY
ENDS
IN STEAM.
Before the night closes, a bamboo basket arrives. The skyline disappears; six xiaolongbao become the whole of Shanghai.
