WATER BEFORE THE STREET

HANGZHOU

Twenty frames move outward from West Lake: water, rain, old streets, new towers and light after dark.

THE LAKE
SETS THE PACE.

West Lake is not a backdrop. Lake and hills, causeways and islands, temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and trees have composed a cultural landscape here for centuries. The city is read from that slow centre outward.

02 / WATER

LANDSCAPE
AS MEASURE.

Distance is the first subject: the pavilion, the boat and the pagoda only tell the eye how far the water extends.

03 / RAIN

WEATHER
EDITS THE CITY.

Rain turns glass into a second lens. Figures soften, traffic blooms and the street briefly loses its hard edges.

THE RIVER
LEARNS TO GLOW.

At Qianjiang New City, the old water logic returns as reflection, horizon and a circle of artificial light.

ONE LAKE.
ONE RED CAUSEWAY.

The chapter returns to paper: more empty space than image, one measured route and a small field note that refuses to close the view.

01 / MEMORY

白居易《忆江南·江南忆》

江南忆,最忆是杭州。
山寺月中寻桂子,
郡亭枕上看潮头。

Of all Jiangnan, Hangzhou returns most clearly: cassia sought by moonlight at the mountain temple; the tide heard from a pillow in the commandery pavilion.

02 / WEATHER

苏轼《饮湖上初晴后雨·其二》
北宋

水光潋滟晴方好,
山色空濛雨亦奇。
欲把西湖比西子,
淡妆浓抹总相宜。

In sun, the water glitters at its best; in rain, the mountains fade into wonder. If West Lake is likened to Xizi, light or lavish dress becomes her equally well.

03 / ABUNDANCE

柳永《望海潮·东南形胜》
北宋

有三秋桂子,十里荷花。
羌管弄晴,菱歌泛夜,
嬉嬉钓叟莲娃。

Cassia through three autumn months; lotus for ten full li. Flutes play into clear weather, water-chestnut songs drift through night, while fishermen and lotus-gatherers take their ease.

04 / WHITE

张岱《湖心亭看雪》
明末清初

雾凇沆砀,
天与云与山与水,
上下一白。

Rime and mist filled the air. Sky, cloud, mountain and water—above and below, everything was white.
